 Pink Flowering Camellia

Zones 7-10

Part Shade

Camellia japonica, also known as Japanese camellia, is an evergreen shrub that typically grows 6-12 feet tall, featuring oval, glossy, dark green leaves (3-4 inches long) with finely serrated edges. Native to China and Japan, it thrives in warm climates, particularly in the southeastern U.S. and Pacific Coast areas, where it is often grown year-round. As the most widely cultivated camellia species, it has numerous varieties.

Flower buds begin to form in mid-summer, appearing in clusters. Removing all but one bud per cluster can enhance flower size. Flowers, ranging from 3-5 inches wide, bloom in winter (December to March) in warmer climates or greenhouses, and in early spring (April) in cooler regions. While the species features single flowers with 5-8 petals, many cultivars offer semi-double, anemone, peony, rose-form double, or formal double flowers. Flowers are typically white, pink, or red, with yellow anthers.
